Before and after

The brown rings at the head of the bed are old urine that had dried and oxidised — that outline shape is the tell. Around them: juice, food marks and a scatter of blue paint. The customer had been sleeping on this under a mattress protector and assumed it was beyond saving.

After — about 98% of the staining gone, no urine smell

We say 98%, not 100%, on purpose. Urine that has been dry for a long time can permanently alter the dye in the ticking, and a faint shadow may stay behind after everything else is gone. What matters more is that nothing is left in the foam — no smell, no bacteria feeding on it, and no ring that reappears in a week.

Why urine needs enzymes, not soap

Urine soaks through the ticking and into the foam, then dries into uric acid crystals. Those crystals do not dissolve in water, which is why a mattress can smell fine when dry and then smell strongly again on a humid day — moisture reactivates them. Detergent and deodoriser only wash the surface and mask the odour for a few days.

An enzyme treatment digests the uric acid at the source. It has to be applied deep enough to reach where the urine actually went, given dwell time to work, and then extracted out rather than left to dry in. On this mattress that was done panel by panel across the whole contaminated area, followed by full hot water extraction and controlled drying so no moisture stayed in the foam.

Urine odour removal is not just for mattresses

The same treatment works anywhere urine has soaked into a soft surface. It is the same chemistry and the same process — only the piece changes:

  • Couches and sectionals — pet accidents in the cushion foam and down in the deck
  • Carpet and the pad underneath — where most of the smell in a room usually lives
  • Armchairs, dining chairs and ottomans
  • Car and RV upholstery
  • Rugs and runners

If the smell is in more than one place, treating only the obvious piece rarely fixes the room. Carpet under and around a couch usually holds as much as the couch does. Odour treatment starts at $49 per room — see odour removal or the full price list.

Frequently asked

Can old urine stains be removed from a mattress?

Usually most of them, yes. On this Buckhead job about 98% of the staining came out and the smell went completely. Urine that has been dry for years can permanently discolour the ticking, so a faint shadow sometimes stays — but the source in the foam is destroyed, which is what causes the smell.

How much does mattress cleaning cost in Atlanta?

Twin $100, Twin XL $125, Full $135, Queen $145, King $165. The mattress on this job was a Full, so $135. These are published flat rates and they do not change by neighbourhood — Buckhead pays the same as anywhere else we serve.

Does the urine smell come back?

Not when it is treated with enzymes and extracted. It comes back when someone only cleans the surface, because the uric acid crystals are still in the foam and humidity reactivates them.

Can you remove urine odour from a couch as well?

Yes. The same enzyme treatment works on couches, sectionals, chairs, carpet and the carpet pad. Odour treatment starts at $49 per room and is often combined with cleaning the piece itself.

Can I sleep on the mattress the same night?

Usually yes. Dry time is 4 to 8 hours with airflow. If we finish in the morning it is ready by bedtime.
